Analysis of Flexible Pavement Design using MITCHPAVE Software
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction:
Analysis of asphalt road is a vast field in terms of
evaluation and estimation of load distribution in pavement layers which affect
directly the road (pavement) or vehicles running on it. The term “Analysis”
implies to test different type of data and alternative to provide best possible
pavement to move on i-e to draw a full plan, profile and cross-section sheets
of the road, alongside calculation of other factors and their implementation.
In other words we can say that it is the process of analyzing the pavement to
provide a long life cycle and economic structure. The process must trigger the
efficiency, economy, and safety aspects of the road project. Each road has its
own layer distribution and depth variably depending on numerous factors.
Flexible pavement |
In this project we have made an analysis of road named
“Ring Road” which is located in Punjab. This road is the best option to analyze
and fully understand the pros and cons of fatigue life and rut depth analysis
as it is a long and multi layered road. The software used for this purpose is
Mitchpave. We had to find to the layers data and depth of each and every layer
and also the others factors affecting like (temperature, air voids, kinematic
viscosity and wheel load it was a difficult task but somehow it was managed.
After that we started our work of analysis and completed in few days. The
results were satisfactory and up to the mark.
MICHPAVE
what is MICHPAVE?
MICHPAVE is a easy to use, non-linear fixed element
program for the study of flexible pavements. The program computes displacements,
strain and stresses inside the pavement due toa single circular wheel load.
Useful design information such as fatigue life and rut depth is also estimated
through practical equations. Most of MICHPAVE is printed in FORTRAN 77.
Graphics and screen manipulations are performed using the FORTRAN callable
GRAFMATIC graphics library, marketed by Micro compatibles Inc., 301 Prelude
Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20901
This report tells about the main and major effects of different factors affecting the life and strength of pavement and we analyze all type of data collected that’s why we have named it as Analysis of road, it will provide reader a vast view of different factors affecting the life of road and helping in understanding the each and every component, element and condition of road pavements. But this project does not include the whole new design of pavement as it is more time consuming.
1.2 Objectives:
The objectives of our project of analysis of road are
same as how geometric modeling is defined. Objectives in terms of uses are a
broad term which cannot be dealt in a single heading but we have summarized the
objectives into two main headings which are different in core. First we would
describe the technical objectives of the road, which are to be fulfilled by the
end of this project and we call primary objectives and these are following:
Road curved |
• To
make the each layer according to design and analysis result so that it does not
affect the life of road.
• To
check the effects of air voids kinematic viscosity and temperature.
• To
calculate the fatigue life and rut depth of road layer.
• To
plot the graphs on excel sheets to provide a basic trend showing the effects of
all drawings on sheets so that a proper layout is established which can be
executed.
Other than these objectives, some of the objectives
are secondary but they are nonetheless as important as the primary ones. These
objectives are also completed even upon completion of design and even during
operation of the desired road after the construction. These objectives are
following:
• To
provide the best layout for such road in prevailing conditions.
• To
ensure the safety of the driver and maximizing the comfort level.
• To
decrease the time required to travel and make it efficient.
• To
make the project economically better and efficient.
• To
complete the project in as less time as possible which directly reduces the
cost of project.
• To
suggest such a design this would have more operational life.
• To
implement such design techniques which in result reduce the maintenance cost of
the project.
